A man was shot and killed by police on Monday afternoon during a reported shootout in the town of Mandeville, following an earlier altercation in which he allegedly murdered another man over a dispute involving a tray of eggs.

According to initial reports from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the incident began around 10:15 AM in the vicinity of the Mandeville town center. Eyewitnesses say the suspect, known locally as “Brown Man,” got into an argument with a vendor after allegedly demanding a tray of eggs for $1000 which the vendor refuse.

Tensions escalated quickly, and “Brown Man” is alleged to have shot the vendor following a verbal altercation.

“He just lost it,” said one witness, who asked not to be named. “All over a tray of eggs. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

Police were alerted and responded to the scene within minutes. Upon arrival, officers reported being fired upon by the suspect. A brief but intense exchange of gunfire followed for four hours during which the suspect was shot.

He was later pronounced dead at the Mandeville Regional Hospital.

Authorities have not yet released the full identity of the deceased man but confirmed he was known to police and had prior run-ins with the law. 2 weapons were recovered from the scene along with approximately 450 rounds of ammunition according to police reports.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a formal probe into the incident, as is standard protocol in all fatal encounters involving law enforcement.

Residents in the area expressed shock and frustration over the incident.

“We need more mental health support and conflict resolution in this community,” said Ms. Marcia Powell, a long-time vendor in the market. “Every day it feels like people are on edge, and it only takes something small to spark violence.”

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.
